Preternatural Phenomena: Werewolves
The preternatural or praeternatural is that which appears outside or beyond (Latin præter) the natural. While this may include what is more commonly called the supernatural, it may also simply indicate extremity - an ordinary phenomenon taken 'beyond' the natural.
Source: Preternatural entry in Wikipedia Known by many names in multiple cultures, werewolves must be distinguished from those of their species that have been demon-infected. Werewolves carrying the deadly demon virus can be distinguished from uninfected weres and Shadow Wolves by their preferred method of walking upright on their hind legs, their putrid sulfuric scent, their mangled, distended canines, and their glowing red eyes. Werewolves cannot shift at will, and are solely influenced by the phase of the moon—thus cannot control their transformations. Unlike Shadow Wolves and normal Werewolves, those werewolves infected by the deadly demon virus are human flesh-eaters and do not have a sense of innate justice or reason for killing. Their pack structure is the converse of that of Shadow Wolves, namely chaotic, violent, and instable. Stronger, physically, than Shadow Wolves and normal Were-creatures, the infected werewolves’ brutality knows no bounds. Therefore, in order for a Shadow Wolf to defeat this target, the Shadow Wolf must hunt it in teams and with its superior cognitive functions. NOTE: Although close genetic cousins, there has been long-standing, inter-clan prejudice between the phyla of Shadow Wolves and Werewolves, mainly because of the at-will shape-shifting advantage that Shadow Wolves enjoy, along with their immunity to silver, and their revulsion toward the virus that shows up in the Werewolves’ recessive gene pool. Another issue that keeps these two groups in diametric opposition is their family structures—Shadow Wolves pair for life and believe in only one soul-mate, whereas Werewolves are less conventional and follow human pair bond structures.
